Dynamic Progression

Understanding the Dynamic progression type for tournaments with larger groups (5 or 6 players per group).

When you create a tournament with groups of 5 or 6 players, DartsSpace automatically uses the Dynamic progression type. This ensures fair bracket generation where players from the same group don't meet too early in the knockout phase.

Why Dynamic Progression?

In a tournament with a group phase, players advance from their groups to the knockout bracket. The number of players advancing from each group determines how they need to be distributed in the bracket.

Players Advancing Per Group

Group SizePlayers to Winners KOPlayers to Consolation KO
3 playersTop 2Bottom 1
4 playersTop 2Bottom 2
5 playersTop 3Bottom 2
6 playersTop 3Bottom 3

The Problem with Traditional Progression

With Traditional progression, the bracket is split into two halves. This works well when only 2 players advance per group:

  • Players from the same group can only meet in the final

However, when 3 or more players advance per group (groups of 5 or 6), two halves aren't enough. With Traditional progression, players from the same group could end up in the same half and potentially meet in the first round of the knockout phase.

How Dynamic Progression Works

Dynamic progression solves this by distributing players across four quarters instead of two halves when more than 2 players advance per group.

Quarter Distribution Example

With 4 groups of 5 players (12 players advancing to Winners KO):

Group1st Place2nd Place3rd Place
AQuarter 1Quarter 2Quarter 3
BQuarter 2Quarter 3Quarter 4
CQuarter 3Quarter 4Quarter 1
DQuarter 4Quarter 1Quarter 2

This rotation ensures:

  • Each group's players are spread across different quarters
  • Players from the same group cannot meet before the semifinals
  • Fair distribution regardless of finishing position

When Is Dynamic Used?

DartsSpace automatically switches to Dynamic progression when:

  • You select a group format with 5 or 6 players per group
  • More than 2 players from any group advance to the knockout phase

You'll see a warning message when starting the tournament if this automatic switch will occur.

Practical Recommendations

Use Groups of 3-4 When:

  • You want maximum flexibility in progression type selection
  • You prefer the traditional 1st vs 2nd matchup style
  • You have a smaller tournament

Use Groups of 5-6 When:

  • You have many players and want to reduce the number of groups
  • You want more competitive games in the group phase
  • You're comfortable with the Dynamic progression system

Summary

Dynamic progression is DartsSpace's solution for fairly distributing players from larger groups into the knockout bracket. When you choose groups of 5 or 6 players, the system automatically ensures that teammates from the group phase are kept apart until later knockout rounds, maintaining competitive integrity throughout your tournament.
