Understanding the Dynamic progression type for tournaments with larger groups (5 or 6 players per group).
When you create a tournament with groups of 5 or 6 players, DartsSpace automatically uses the Dynamic progression type. This ensures fair bracket generation where players from the same group don't meet too early in the knockout phase.
In a tournament with a group phase, players advance from their groups to the knockout bracket. The number of players advancing from each group determines how they need to be distributed in the bracket.
| Group Size | Players to Winners KO | Players to Consolation KO |
|---|---|---|
| 3 players | Top 2 | Bottom 1 |
| 4 players | Top 2 | Bottom 2 |
| 5 players | Top 3 | Bottom 2 |
| 6 players | Top 3 | Bottom 3 |
With Traditional progression, the bracket is split into two halves. This works well when only 2 players advance per group:
However, when 3 or more players advance per group (groups of 5 or 6), two halves aren't enough. With Traditional progression, players from the same group could end up in the same half and potentially meet in the first round of the knockout phase.
Dynamic progression solves this by distributing players across four quarters instead of two halves when more than 2 players advance per group.
With 4 groups of 5 players (12 players advancing to Winners KO):
| Group | 1st Place | 2nd Place | 3rd Place |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | Quarter 1 | Quarter 2 | Quarter 3 |
| B | Quarter 2 | Quarter 3 | Quarter 4 |
| C | Quarter 3 | Quarter 4 | Quarter 1 |
| D | Quarter 4 | Quarter 1 | Quarter 2 |
This rotation ensures:
DartsSpace automatically switches to Dynamic progression when:
You'll see a warning message when starting the tournament if this automatic switch will occur.
| Aspect | Traditional | Dynamic |
|---|---|---|
| Group sizes | 3-4 players | 3-6 players |
| Bracket regions | 2 halves | 4 quarters (when needed) |
| Same-group earliest meeting | Finals | Semifinals |
| Automatic selection | Groups of 3-4 | Groups of 5-6 |
Dynamic progression is DartsSpace's solution for fairly distributing players from larger groups into the knockout bracket. When you choose groups of 5 or 6 players, the system automatically ensures that teammates from the group phase are kept apart until later knockout rounds, maintaining competitive integrity throughout your tournament.
